The game depicts or mentions numerous historical figures, including William the Conqueror, Charlemagne, Genghis Khan, Harold Godwinson, Robert Guiscard, Robert the Bruce, Harald Hardrada, El Cid, Constantine X Doukas, Harun al-Rashid, Alexios I Komnenos, Richard the Lionheart, Ivar the Boneless, Alfred the Great, Baldwin I of Jerusalem, Boleslaw the Bold and Saladin, but allows for the player to choose less-significant figures such as minor dukes and counts, and for the creation of entirely new characters with the use of the Ruler Designer DLC. Crusader Kings 3Įmperor positions are particularly rare, with only the Holy Roman Emperor and the Byzantine Emperor seated in 1066. There are five levels of authority in the game four of which are playable: Barons (unplayable), Counts/Earls, Dukes, Kings and Emperors. This adds an additional strategy to marriages where a player will attempt to breed the best individuals to maximise the quality of future offspring. The game employs a genetics and education system where children will inherit the traits, culture, religion and skills of their parents and educator.
The simulation is open-ended so the definition of ‘success’ is completely defined by the player. Through the strategic use of marriages and assassinations amongst many other things, the player works to achieve success for his dynasty. The game can be described as a dynasty simulator where the player controls a Medieval dynasty from 1066 to 1453. This is the game’s way of telling you that everything you know and love about your insignificant kingdom/empire/duchy will be utterly destroyed. In January of the year 1215, you will get a rather ominous message telling you of rumours of a Khan of Khans in the east.
